Exactly what is the meaning of success? Is it being wealthy, being famous, studying self improvement, owning your own home, being retired, having a good family, or is the meaning of success just to be satisfied with what you've already got? Countless people achieve their goals only to find out they still feel a bit anxious inside or downright miserable. They wonder if there is more to life or if they missed a secret somewhere. You see, it is very easy to continually work towards your goals and never experience the self fulfillment that is supposed to come with achieving them. If you are one of those people who never stop to enjoy their accomplishments or if your definition of success is so high that you are not motivated to consistently work towards it then the following paragraphs are for YOU!
Many people define success by what others have or have accomplished or even worse they let other people define success for them! Becoming independent and self-aware is the key to being and feeling successful (regardless of the goals you choose) much like identifying a travel destination before you take a flight is necessary, you need to have a good idea of what your own unique version of a successful life will look like and how it will feel once you arrive. Most importantly, you need to find your own definition of what is successful along the way. Is meerly being on your own path and marching to your own drum a success or are you the type of person that needs very concrete and tangible results to meet your criteria for success?
The reason you must consiously choose your meaning of success is because every success or achievement has a cost. If your goal is to become a neurosurgeon there will be a cost; you'll have to spend years in school with countless hours studying; not to mention the continuous stress of being a neurosurgeon. If you want to be fit and healthy you'll have to pay the cost of saying no to junk food and exercising several times per week. Essentially, everyone who sets out to achieve something must pay a cost. Paying the cost is why it's critical that you make your own decisions regarding your personal success. If you choose to be highly successful by somebody else's standards you'll still have to pay a very high cost but the reward will be entirely different.
Ultimately your achievement of success will come down to how you feel inside and how you feel about the person you are becoming. If you are wise and carefully choose your own meaning of success then the cost you have to pay will usually as rewarding as the end goal.
